José M. Arbelo, head of the Parkinson's and Movement Disorders Unit at San Roque University Hospitals in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, points out that it is a disease that produces slowness and tremor, that is, "a shaking paralysis" produced by a dopamine deficiency. It produces the well-known symptoms of tremor, rigidity and loss of balance, which appear progressively and unevenly in each patient: in some the loss of balance is more emphasized, while in others rigidity or tremors predominate. Treatments Arbelo points out that it is not easy to transmit the diagnosis to the patient, and affirms that personally it is the most unpleasant thing about his profession. However, he remembers that there are many remedies to improve the symptoms of the disease. In the first stage it is treated with oral medications, which are effective for about eight years. Later, complications will appear that can be treated with other therapeutic solutions, including continuous infusion of medications and surgery, means that allow reversing symptoms and improving quality of life.
